Skill Development

Skill Development Program Targeted at New Skaters

Marquette Junior Hockey will again this year be offering our USA Hockey Skill Development Program. The Skill Development Program is designed for brand new skaters. It is targeted at boys and girls in the 4-6 year-old age group, but we have had skaters in previous years as young as 2 and as old as 15.
It is a fun, hockey based "learn-to-skate" program that takes your young skater literally from the ground up. The skater is taught to stand on his skates, skate forward, skate backward, turn, and stop. This is accomplished through a series of educational drills and fun games. There is no competition in the Skills Development Program.

The program meets on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and on Saturdays at Noon. The program begins on the first Wednesday in October and runs through the last Wednesday in February.

The cost for this six-month program is $95. Included in the fee is a hockey stick for each player, a roll of hockey tape, and a hockey jersey.

To register for the program, click the "Registration" button in the top left and follow the instructions.

If you have any questions, contact Tim McIntosh at 906-228-9193 or wcatgoal@mqthockey.org.

The Skill Development Program is for boys and girls of all ages and is designed for beginning hockey players who want to learn the basics of the game. The players should know skating basics.  Skill Development focuses on improving skating skills, stick-handling, and positioning.  We usually have cross-ice scrimmage games as the season progresses.

Our goal is to teach hockey skills and improve skating so that in the player’s second year of skating they may progress in the Marquette Junior Hockey program.

Mandatory Equipment for Hockey Programs:
  • Helmet
  • Breezers (hockey pants)
